# Workflow orchestration

> Encode policies and institutional knowledge into AI-augmented decisional steps.

Workflow orchestration encodes policies, tradecraft, and institutional know-how into a series of AI-augmented decisional steps that run on demand, including via APIs.

## Workflow structure

Each workflow consists of a sequence of steps, where each step represents a decision point or action:

```yaml
workflow:
  name: itar-compliance-review
  steps:
    - id: classify
      type: classification
      model: itar-usml
      action: Determine USML category for each item
    - id: sanctions-check
      type: screening
      databases: [sdn, entity-list, denied-persons]
      action: Screen all parties against sanctioned lists
    - id: technical-review
      type: human-review
      condition: classification.confidence < 0.95
      assignee: subject-matter-expert
      action: Review items with low-confidence classification
    - id: approve
      type: decision
      requires: [classify, sanctions-check, technical-review]
      action: Generate approval or denial recommendation
```

## Step types

| Type             | Description                                                           |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `classification` | AI-powered document or item classification against a policy framework |
| `screening` | Automated checks against databases, sanctions lists, or rule sets |
| `human-review` | Route to a subject matter expert for manual review |
| `decision`       | Aggregate results and generate a recommendation                       |
| `generation` | Generate documents, reports, or redacted versions |
| `notification`   | Alert stakeholders of status changes                                  |

## Running workflows

### Via API

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.conductorai.com/v1/workflows/run \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CONDUIT_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "workflow": "itar-compliance-review",
    "input": {
      "document_ids": ["doc_abc123", "doc_def456"],
      "priority": "high"
    }
  }'
```

### Via dashboard

Navigate to **Workflows > Run** in the Conduit dashboard, select a workflow, attach documents, and initiate the review.

## Monitoring

Track workflow progress in real time:

```bash
curl https://api.conductorai.com/v1/workflows/runs/run_xyz789 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CONDUIT_API_KEY"
```

```json
{
  "id": "run_xyz789",
  "workflow": "itar-compliance-review",
  "status": "in_progress",
  "steps": {
    "classify": { "status": "completed", "duration_ms": 4200 },
    "sanctions-check": { "status": "completed", "duration_ms": 1800 },
    "technical-review": { "status": "pending", "assigned_to": "sme@org.gov" },
    "approve": { "status": "waiting" }
  }
}
```
